How and Why it All Started

John L. Hawkins

John and Karen Hawkins

I always had a passion for mechanical things, bikes-boats- cars-military vehicles-planes, just everything. Who would ever of thought that Lamar and Nelson Bunker Hunt and Charolais cattle breed would start me on the road to seeing that passion come true.

In the mid 70’s, I started selling Porsche, Mercedes, and BMW automobile. After acquiring our dealers license, I was convinced by a friend to start selling towing equipment.  By the end of the 70s I was one of the largest Century wrecker dealers in the country. 1982 I became a Field Factory Rep for Century living in Denver, San Francisco, Portland, and then Chattanooga in 1991 which is still home today.

With the help of some many people, we made the Century product known worldwide and the Heavy-Duty Division, which I directed, the dominate brand and design of the industry.  To this day, that is still the case. In the 90s as a hobby, I started flipping Sea Ray boats and in 2008 just before the recession I traded a Sea Ray for a Country Coach, and I was hooked.

But unlike boating, coaching had a huge void, the lack of weekend fun at the docks and meeting people for all around Chattanooga that came to witness the beauty of the Tennessee River and Lake Chichmauga.

So, on our third attempt, we successful founded Hawkins Pointe and JLH Coachworks. Hawkins Pointe offers that friendship of 50 overnight sites, covered storage, and our one-of-a-kind Club Storage facility.  JLH Coachworks, became the arm of our continued knowledge of the motorhome industry.  And the manufacturing of towing equipment the education of the service and mechanical demands.

Unlike any other network, we attempt to take each coach, and personally spend time with it. It’s not how many we can sell, it how we can sell each coach and meet the full expectations of the client. We have an excellent local service team— from paint, to tires, to chassis, to the conversion. The product partnership and knowledge of 40 plus years in towing manufacture, supports today what we bring to our coaching family.

We are excited to announce that a new expansion project is in the works for 2023.
